The Brits are still not over the Iraq War, which is still going on in case you forgot. And, to Tony Blair's chagrin, they are not over the dubious intelligence and equally dubious political decision making that got us, and them, into it.
According to a Wash Post story today, a new allegation a surfaced just ahead of the British elections over whether Blair pressured his chief legal adviser to change a memo over the legality of the war.
From my perspective the really disheartening thing about the article is the truth of this line.
In contrast to the United States, the legality of the war has remained an enduring issue here both because of longstanding respect for international law and because Britain has signed up as a participant in the new International Court of Justice.
Badges? We don't need no stinking badges.
But, as an admitted political junkie the interesting thing to watch going forward will be how the reactions of Blair's two political opponents play. The conservative candidate, Michael Howard, who supports the war too, was forced to become vitriolic on the "lying" angle of the story. The third party Liberal Democrat candidate, Charles Kennedy, who has consistently opposed the war, was able to take a softer line against Blair and simply reemphasized his opposition to the whole thing.
My guess is with Howard flinging the mud, any benefit will go to Kennedy.
